Halong Bay was deep sea during the Ordovician and Silurian periods (500-410 million years ago), and was at shallow sea level during the Carboniferous and Permian periods (340-250 million years ago).

Since 570,000,000-500,000,000 BC, at the beginning of the Cambrian era, the area which now forms Halong Bay was basically mainland and submitted to a process of rain erosion. At the end of the Cambrian period, the area was flooded, commencing the existence of Halong Bay.
